Selenium (Se) is an essential component of glutathione peroxidase which aids the detoxification of peroxides that are toxic to cell membranes. Selenium also plays a role in the control of thyroid hormone metabolism. Selenium is very toxic and should not be overdosed. Requirement is about 0.1 mg/kg dry matter in ration. Selenium is usually added to commercial compound feeds and mineral mixtures.
