Protein requirement (work) Print
The same energy to protein ratio is used for work as for maintenance (ie. 5.2 grams per MJ). Increased provisions of energy provided during work therefore proportionately increases the protein requirement. For heavily exercised horses protein allowances are more likely to become too high rather than too low. A notable exception is when increased energy demands are provided for by fats or vegetable oils (which provide energy but not protein).
